We live in the heart of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. We love growing stuff - especially food. There's nothing better than fresh veggies from our very own garden.
We took over our first community garden plot along the banks of the Red River in the spring of 2008. Our plot is 30x40 feet in heavy clay/loam soil that we refer to as "Red River Gumbo". It is fairly fertile, but very sticky when wet and rock hard when dry. We live in plant hardiness Zone 2b. Our average first frost free day is May 24 and our average last frost free day is September 15. Our summers can be very hot and sunny.
Our family garden is tended by Aidan (9), Melanie (7), Mars (our one year old Poodle/Bichon) and Getty (too old to mention). Darryl (my hubby) supports our efforts and enjoys the fruits (veggies!) of our labour but prefers to stay out of the garden.
Our gardening skills are improving constantly. We rely heavily on trial and error, tips from our gardening neighbours, online resources and whatever I can remember from our massive farm garden of my youth.
