How Much Does It Cost to Garden?

Saving money is not why we garden. We do it because we enjoy it and really love fresh produce. But for curiosity sake, we thought we'd keep a running total of what it costs us to keep our garden going.

These costs are for a 30 x 40' community garden plot by the river and for the planters and beds that we fill with edibles around our house.

Food Prep & Storage Costs 2010
We could have done without these gadgets, but they make the task so much more fun. And, as I explained to my husband, if you amortize their cost over 15 years, it's really not so bad!
Food Mill - $76
French Bean cutter - $6
Upright Freezer $688
Ziploc baggies - $12
Total for 2010: $782 ($52/yr over 15 years!)
